Course: Processing & Testing of Rubber

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the Course, lunch and tour will be from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm at ARDL, Barberton.

Course Overview:
This half-day course will give an in-depth look at mixing, testing and vulcanizing of rubber.
Topics Covered:
- Incoming raw material inspection
- Key characteristics for certain raw materials
- Mixing rubber: rotor types, batch sizing, 1-pass vs. 2-pass, conventional vs. upside down mixing, raw materials that require special attention during mixing, common mixing and milling problems, and batch take-off.
- Testing for quality control: rheology, Mooney, durometer, unaged physical properties, specific gravity, and dispersion testing.
- Vulcanization of rubber: molding, extrusion, steam cure.

About the Instructor: Nicki Hershberger
Bio: Nicki Hershberger, V.P. of Technical Consulting at Akron Rubber Development Inc., has 30 years of rubber experience in compound development, setting up production processes, engineering new products, and market development. She is a graduate of Kent State University and is an instructor for the ACS Rubber Division and has substantial experience in carbon black, custom rubber mixing, compound development, and testing. She also serves as the Rubber Division, ACS Outreach Committee Chairperson and is on the Board of Directors.
